The Louisiana Brown Pelican...our state bird. Thankfully, these birds were saved from extinction many years ago once it was discovered that the fish they ate were tainted by DTD. Once they ate the fish, the shells of the eggs that the pelican laid were so fragile, the baby chicks did not survive. DTD was banned, and the pelicans have made a wonderful comeback!
